Houston Dash D Whitney Engen called up to USWNT

Houston Dash defender Whitney Engen has been called up to the U.S. women’s national team for international friendlies against Canada on Jan. 31 and Russia on Feb. 8 and Feb. 12, it was announced today. A total of 24 players were called up by head coach Tom Sermanni.

The USA will play its first match of year on Jan. 31 against Canada at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas (8 p.m. CT on FOX Sports 1). The team then travels to Florida to face Russia on Feb. 8 at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton (2:30 p.m. CT), followed by a quick trip to Atlanta to play Russia again on Feb. 12 at the Georgia Dome (6:30 p.m. CT). Engen, 26, has earned 10 caps for the U.S. women’s national team and has scored one goal. Engen currently plays for Swedish side Tyresö FF in Damallsvenskan but is allocated to the Dash for the 2014 NWSL season.

The Houston Dash are a National Women’s Soccer League club that will begin play in April 2014 for the start of the league’s second season. The Dash are the first expansion club in the NWSL, joining the eight original members that launched the league in 2013. The NWSL is supported by the Canadian Soccer Association, Federation of Mexican Football and the United States Soccer Federation. It is the top-flight women’s professional soccer league in North America, featuring many of the top players from the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as talent from around the world. The 24-game regular season runs from April through August. The team trains at Houston Sports Park (HSP), the premier training facility in Southeast Texas, and plays at BBVA Compass Stadium in downtown Houston.
